This comes up weekly here... the technotes contain at least three methods
for such version detection, each appropriate for different situations...
one version uses JavaScript (for browsers which support it), another uses
4.0-only abilities such as attempted variable assignment, and if you're
targeting the 4.02 player then the printing documentation describes how to
use the new "version" property.

Perhaps the simplest is to use the "4.0" #version argument to the CODEBASE
parameter (automatically produced for you via Flash 4's "Publish"), and
then to have a small MP3-compressed sound in the SWF on your splash page...
"if you can't hear the music you need the Flash 4 Player".

By the way, at Dec 99 about half of all consumers could view Flash 4
content, according to Media Metrix. In Dec '99 we also passed the
million-successful-downloads-per-day milestone, and in Rob Burgess's
keynote at the South By Southwest conference this week he stated that in
Feb '00 alone there were 44 million successful downloads, almost a 50%
increase over these two months. The strong majority of the world's browsers
have moved over to Flash 4 capabilities already. Have fun!
