Good idea. I was thinking of the same thing. Before the user is allowed
to press the button to do the rotation thing you could possibly do a test
rotation or two (somehow invisible to the user) to get and average any
timer data that you might need. It wouldn't be entirely accurate but with
a little playing around with the idea you could probably get the technique
to work accurate enough for your purpose.
