Thanks for your help Karin! This makes sense.
I also discovered that putting the mc in the OVER state of the button
without a "stop" action in the blank first frame will permit the mc to play
when the cursor triggers the button.(no telltarget required).
Making sure that the DOWN state has a frame, but not a keyframe also allows
the mc to only play once, which is what I'm trying to achieve. I don't know
if this is a "textbook" solution, but it does mean that the button can be
reused many times, without having to telltarget the main timeline mc. (which
is what I was trying to do before).
