Michael,
You could achieve an effect like this pretty easily using tell targets.
You just make each square a movie clip of a growing then shrinking box,
and you put a stop action in the middle (and at the beginning of
course). Put invisible buttons over these tell target movies and use the
tell target command for on mouse over.
I know that my explanation leaves alot to be desired...so I'll give you
a helpful URL where you can learn about tell targets if you need help
with those:
