I don't think that's possible, either, in Flash. You can use the rotate
tool (an option under the arrow tool) to slant an object, but not to make
it diminish in one direction.

A mask is either there or not. Gradients have no effect on the masking. But
you can use text as the mask, and the layer below can consist of a
gradient, so that as the text-mask sweeps across it, the writing becomes
more opaque toward one side of the screen.
