Russ,
There are probably a ton of ways to do it depending on your situation, but here
is what I would do to make an MC loop 10 times, for example:
Make a movie clip containing your animation with at least 2 frames. In the
first frame, check the value of the variable "/counter." If counter is less
than 10, add one to "counter."
In the next frame, check the value of "/counter." If it is greater than 10,
Tell Target/go to and play whatever you want to play; If it is less than 10, go
to and play frame 1 again.

wanted to try to help out.
