Why not just use load movie to create a little flash popup? I think of alert
boxes as little, so those would be perfect and it works on all browsers that
can see flash 4 (so far at least - I haven't seen any that don't). You could
always put in an invisible button and map some other key or whatever you
wanted to cause the popup (button press on return key or something) as well.

Still hoping for more critique/constructive criticism/comments/bug reports
or whatever else. There's no alert box yet, but I'll hafta put that in when
I do the print button already suggested.
