If it's a static background (like a circular frame or such), then you could
also use a mask on that QuickTime sprite in Director. It would be about the
same performance speed as using a background-transparent ink to drop out
white pixels in that non-directToStage video sprite, however.
You can get fastest video performance when it writes its entire rectangle
directly to the screen. Once you start compositing it in the offscreen
buffer, though, then there's that two-step write to get the composited
contents to the screen.
