>From my own investigations in this area I've come to a similar conclusion:
for photo-real VR demonstrations of real objects or spaces, QTVR is the best
way to go. None of the programatic, textured-vector based 3D engines produce
the level of realism, also much harder work to set up than taking a VR
photo. However, for open ended game-type 3D, where the originals are created
on the computer anyway, and project requires open ended navigation, then a
3D engine (for example Nemo3d) is of real benefit.

I have a suspicion of the economic viability of 'Product' demos ala
metastream, as its a textured 3D model of the actual object rather than a VR
photo of the actual object, and I think greater customer trust will likely
come from a photo than from a CG model.
