Subject: Re: FLASH: El Rebuttal (now: online economics)

One interesting thing about the online world is that the currency is
attention... human time. It does take time to use a search engine, to read
previous posts.

On a mailing list, however, the people who choose to incur such costs are
not those who pay such costs. Rephrased, it's cheaper to push out a "How do
I?" post than to read yesterday's thread on the very topic. Other people
will pay, as they evaluate the message.

This is why flames have a definite function online. There are useless
flames, of course, but if someone imposes a cost on the community, then
they need the feedback of the effects on the community.

Related: The online world welcomes newbies... we're in the fortunate
situation where the increased mindfulness of any works to the benefit of
all. (Rephrased, if someone else makes a great site, it helps you sell your
next site... it's non-zero-sum.) Just following the standard online habits
of lurking-before-leaping, pulling-before-pushing, and the rest of the tips
at the Netiquette repositories, helps in keeping a healthy environment.
