Shockwave and Flash can work together... each tends to have a different realm.

Flash's advantages include the fast startup time, the resizability, the
wide variety of players distributed, and more. Shockwave's angle is a
little different, in the intense interactivity, the control over streaming
and media types, etc. Both are graphically exciting, but they're usually
used for different things.

A good way to compare the types of things designers achieve with them is to
visit the ShockRave site. Cartoons can be made in either tool, for
instance. Is this along the lines of what you were looking for...?
