I think for clarity's sake it's important to keep terms straight. Flash
uses the term "mask" to refer to a layer containing a solid fill. Layers
that are set to be "masked" by this layer will show through only where the
mask exists. Phil, it appears you are using a mask to define the visible
area of several layers, but you are not using gradients within the mask.
Gradients don't work in masks in Flash. What you are using looks like a
white-to-transparent gradient that is masked and which slides away to
reveal the pattern below, which is also masked. "Mask" was an unfortunate
term for Macromedia to use, if you ask me, because most of us think of a
mask as something which covers up an object, unlike Flash masks which
reveal objects.
