FLASH: Double masks...

Has anyone ever managed to get "double masks" working?  I want to show an L-shaped box filling in gradually, like a paintbrush, so I want it to fill from top to bottom and then left to right.  The only way I know of doing this is to tween a mask from top to bottom, and then one from left to right.  However, I cannot do this.  I've tried repeating the layer twice, each masked seperately.  I've tried nesting masks (but that was more of a guess than a specific attempt).  And I've tried tweening the 2 masks in 1 layer (don't even ask what happened there!)


So, any help available?
