Well, why not start backward?

Make the number of frames you think you need for the tween.

Create your L shape mask you want it to end with.

Add a keyframe at the end.

Go to the middle of the 'morph', create a keyframe and make the bottom of
the L part scaled back so that it looks like an I


Tween that.

Put in a keyframe at the beginning and scale the I up to just a line

Tween that.

Make it a mask.
