Subject: FLASH: Movie Transparency
From: Nigel Randsley-Pena

The question of movie transparency has come up several times on this
list. This arises from the fact that I.E. type browsers support the
wmode parameter but Netscape type browsers do not, so as would be normal
people try to get the same effect working in Netscape.
Replies to this type of question have stated that you can set your
background to a colour with an alpha effect and this will somehow work.
This is not true.
Flash3 introduced a 4th element in the colour descriptor, the alpha
channel, with this we now have two type of colour fields. The older RGB
from Flash2 and before and the newer RGBA since Flash3.
Now the tag that sets the background colour in Flash, any version, is of
RGB type so even if you declare your background as having an alpha value
this will not be passed on to your swf file.
Conclusion : It is not possible, without a revision of the swf format to
have a background colour with alpha.
I hope this will help to clarify this matter.
P.S.: If you find that this feature would be useful, why not suggest it
for the flash wish-list.
