Subject: RE: AW: FLASH: Is internet design with Flash possible? ;-)

and if you want to learn photoshop: $650, illustratator: $300, freehand:
$300, Director: $1000, Any number of 3D engines: 300 - 1000+

I'll agree that sometimes the best method is to roll up your sleeves and
just immerse yourself, but can you afford to buy your college kid this
software? the software upgrades? That's not even counting a 2-3000 computer
system that requires a 500 upgrade every six months.

I believe that a legitimate course could be made out of a general heading of
"understanding multimedia interfaces" and another "vector animation" but I
believe teaching a specific software like "Flash" in school is why
graduating students are typically 2-5 years behind the industry.

I think its important that students have the opportunity to learn multimedia
in the university environment, not just in specialized art schools or on
their own. It broadens the base of all students by affording them a new
mode of communicating,

I'll agree that it sometimes seems that there is very little substantive
value derived from universities, but I firmly believe that it does challenge
every students mode of thought, and exposes them to new ways of
communicating. Many believe that the seemingly superfluous amounts of work
which you describe as 95% BS compliment this idea, others believe it
provides a foundation for a good work ethic, and still others see its
utility as nominal at best.

I agree that there shouldn't be a course that teaches Flash, but I do
believe that there are many useful and intelligent things that can be
derived from mediums such as Vector animation, computer illustration, and
especially elements of good design. Furthermore, I don't believe it is a
viable idea to require that persons intrested in learning these things
invest thousands of dollars worth of software and equipment that may not
provide any return for years.
