Thanks jd, yes what you wrote does make sense...
the thing is, I am placing a video clip (not a flash animation)
which already contains the audio portion inside a custom video
controller.

I've figured out the problem and suggest my name be added to the long
list of people whose heads are firmly planted...
the "play every frame" box was checked in the QT export settings.
When this box is checked no audio will play.
duh.
