I know this response is a little late since I'm just reading the weekend's list on Monday morning, but I thought my insight might help out.
I find it extremely easier to create my art in Freehand and then bring it into Flash since I learned the bezier pen tool before getting to know the Flash way of drawing. Anyways, the way I solve the problem is simply by copying from Freehand and pasting into Flash. The only thing that you have to keep in mind when doing this is that Flash will only paste the fills and not the outlines of the objects, and also that all fills will be black. (This sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. If you try it you will understand what I mean) Also, another good thing about doing it this way is that the pasted object is then completely alterable when in Flash, you just need to break it apart.
Okay, I hope this helps somebody!

The best way to get FH drawings in flash is exporting as
.swf from Freehand (mak sure you have the FH 8.01b version
in which the .sfw export module was improved).
Flash doesn't support all Freehand attributes (e.g. dashed
lines, some text attributes).
As far as I understand, the creation of symbols to replace
and refer FreeHand elements by Flash is meant as a feature
to keep file sizes down. I just place them in a folder in
the document library in Flash to get them out of the way,
and don't touch them.
Hope this helps,
