I'd like to follow up with the original poster, thanks... they should be
able to achieve what they want, more easily.
I suspect they're actually talking about the Macromedia Flash Player 5 in a
Netscape browser, rather than the Macromedia Flash 5 authoring environment.
A Netscape Plugin will not be activated on a page which does not show this
content. Therefore I suspect they're opening a page with a
rendered-in-realtime animation. This would, of course, impose a load on the
processor.
They could also see a version-to-version difference if the particular SWF
they're viewing was set with a very high frame rate, as described in the
advisory:
"Issues with Macromedia Flash Player 5"
http://www.macromedia.com/go/14732
If my hunch is correct, and they're actually keeping the browser open to a
very high framerate movie while trying to do other things in other apps,
then they might consider fixing the source problem by setting their movie
to a framerate which can be more readily achieved on a wider range of
machines. If this is not their own movie, then they can just flip to some
other page in the browser. This seems more sustainable than never-ever
viewing any current SWF content again.
