I don't know if this any help, but I thought I'd throw it in
just in case. I wrote a little program that works a bit
differently from JStart, but has some similar results. It's
simple to use, if you read the readme.

If this program doesn't work, then I'd guess you don't
have a default player for mpegs. Try double-clicking an
mpeg to see if it actually opens up in a player to verify
this.
