The QT5 preview release includes the new "Flash Media Handler", as we call
it. This is built on the core Flash 4 engine which we get from Macromedia.
Since QuickTime has a broad body of it's own actions we set it up to pass
the Flash actions to the appropriate QT "Wired Actions", resulting in a QT
track type which behaves almost exactly like Flash itself.
The limitations are no Load Movie/Load Variable, and no direct MP3 audio
support (Flash MP3 sounds won't play). We have support for these things in
other parts of QuickTime, and our assessment is that people delivering Flash
in QT can use the QT feature instead. The sound problem is the easiest to
remedy, but using the options provided in the Flash tool's publish as QT
window.
The easiest way to make a QT movie with a Flash track is to drop a swf file
on QTPlayer. For more control of the process, check out the options for QT
under "publish settings". If you get a warning saying that QT can't handle
Flash 4, ignore it.
There's not much available for documentation, but what there is is available
to members of Apple's developer programs, including the free "Online"
membership. Go to developer.apple.com to sign up. Developers will be seeded
with more frequent beta releases of QT5 over the coming months. There is
also a QT5 developer mailing list.
If you have questions, let me know, and if you have an opinion on our Flash
support I'm open to hearing that as well. Part of our current strategy is to
get Flash 5 support done ASAP (instead of worrying about our less than full
Flash 4 support). Another is that we figure that Flash-specific projects
will tend to publish in Flash anyway, and that those interested in QT as a
publishing format are looking to include QT features.
