If you only have one copy of a file, then I'd not recommend that practice,
no matter which computer application you may be using....

For "How might I fix my only copy of a file?" then there are file-recovery
utilities advertised in most computer shops, and these work with
some-but-not-all types of file damage.

(For the implicit "Should I expect to not work?" then no, you should expect
one computer to work pretty much as another does. You might want to check
out the differences there.)
