Mike,

The randomizer has to be exterior to Flash using JavaScript or VBScript
as you say. If you want to stay clear of solutions like this then use
this trick :
Place various invisible triggers (buttons) on your scene. When the user
does a mouse over have it trigger a tell target.
The disadvantage of this solution is that it requires user intervention,
i.e. the user has to walk his cursor over the movie's area so be sure to
place some attractors on scene that will motivate him to do so.
