If a file was damaged, try a disk recovery utility such as Norton's and
such... sometimes these can work wonders.
Otherwise, if that's your only copy, it's indeed a sad situation, and one
that most people have been in at least once. The standard practice is to
"Save As" every hour or so, so that you have an archive trail of various
versions. Be sure to save to another drive too, and for important work keep
an offsite copy... everyone does lose files on occasion, sorry.
