My 2 pennies...
Before you blow them off, ask yourself these questions:
1. Will being involved in this project, however segmented your role, help you
in the long run by being an excellent portfolio piece?
2. is there the possibility that you'll only design the character parts on THIS
project, but that down the road they might have other projects in which you
would play a more significant part?
If you feel like they're planning to take your work, show you the door, and
then give someone else 100% credit when the final product comes out, you might
want to pass. Anytime you end up in a situation of trying to reclaim credit for
designs which others have already been lauded for, you invariably end up
looking like a bitter and jealous designer who's trying to steal someone elses
glory, even if you really were the one with the vision. But if they'll give you
credit where its due, it could be worth it.
