Character design is a valid and important credit. If you are working with
Disney or other mainstream broadcast companies, its possible there are union
considerations.

If you *are* doing character design, then charge em up the wazoo. Also, you
could ask for an additional flat rate consultanting fee to oversee further
production work. Thats kosher and wouldn't be unusual.

I have also done deals like "give me design AND production and you get x$/
hour. Just design and the rate is x+25$/hr". In other words, I charge a
lower rate for design and production than I do for design alone.

I used to do this a lot. After a while though, when you have spent 20 hours
a day for eight weeks glued to the monitor, the higher rate for design only
starts to look more appealing...
