None that I'm aware of. We did change how ActionScript works in the new
player, which is supposed to make performance faster, not slower. Why a
routine plays slower in the new player vs the old one is unknown to me.

If you found a better way to do this in Flash 5 - putting the char codes
into an array - I say that's the best solution I can think of. I know that
you want to know "why" - you could contact Tech Support to see if they can
look at this further - but I don't know. The main thing is that there are
better ways of doing routines and handling strings in the new ActionScript,
which makes both coding and playback a lot better.
