John,
You are definitely on the right track. Once you trace an image, you can
safely delete the bmp that it came from. This might take a few tries if you
haven't done much tracing. Flash's trace works fine, but you may have to
undo and then adjust the settings and try again. The general rule around
here is:
If it takes too long to trace, it will probably take too long to download.
This is rather general, and you can optimize the curves
(modify>curves>optimize) if the vector is too intense.
Also, there are third party tracers that are equally good:
Adobe Streamline (out of production, I think, but great if you can find it)
another is XAOS segmenter, (I downloaded the trial, I will let the group
know how well it works)
As far as your navigational style goes; I would stick with the multiple
swf's. Maybe even try different html pages for each. This will give the user
the 'back' button. They get a little squirrelly when 'back' actually takes
them to a site they came from.
(one of Flash's shortcoming's, but definitely a workaround)
As far as overall size, try to target your audience.
If it is a corporate site, your audience has broadband access (T1,T3,ADSL,
etc)
If it is for mass consumption by the public, try to keep it under 125k or
so(just a general figure)and give the user some preloading text to keep
their eyes busy. Remember, text will keep the user from even realizing that
there is something loading in the background.
Avoid the dreaded: "please wait...loading..."
