You can think of it this way...since Flash works with vector shapes, a
device font - or a font that doesn't have outlines included - doesn't give
Flash the information it needs to work with. Therefore you cannot do any
altering of shape, orientation, masking, etc.

The reason the animation works is that it's been converted to a symbol. Now
Flash has the info it needs, and it's no longer really a device font, or a
'font' at all.
