Hiya Suzy, Good question. There's heaps of commercial options and I'd wager there's a range of specialst options specifically for sporting events, although that's a little out of my area. Anyone who's met me, knows I'm not terribly sporty! Two vanilla setups that are very widely used are: http://buddypress.org http://drupal.org and http://commons.acquia.com We use a Drupal setup at Chinwag, although not all of the community features are enabled, it's also used by huge events like SXSW to manage their programme/community. There's a hefty bit of customisation involved. Feel free to drop me a line if you want to chat this through offline.
