Thanks for your input, very much appreciated.  Drupal seems to be very much
favored for this type of CGC site but as you say, needs some customization
to really make it sing.  Most of them do.  Lets see if this project goes
anywhere.

Hiya Suzy,

Good question. There's heaps of commercial options and I'd wager there's a
range of specialst options specifically for sporting events, although that's
a little out of my area. Anyone who's met me, knows I'm not terribly sporty!

Two vanilla setups that are very widely used are:

http://buddypress.org
http://drupal.org and http://commons.acquia.com

We use a Drupal setup at Chinwag, although not all of the community features
are enabled, it's also used by huge events like SXSW to manage their
programme/community. There's a hefty bit of customisation involved.
