Hi Nick.

Pivotal tracker gives a very clear estimate of delivery.

There are other tools, but we’ve found it really nice and lightweight.

You can base the velocity on previous projects at the outset to get an idea
of how the project looks if the resource remains constant – setting release
dates accordingly. Gives you a Gantt like release plan, that updates as
the team deliver stories.

As long as your estimation is consistent (not even accurate) you get a
super nice view that updates every time points are delivered, each day.

Client can then chop and change priorities, dragging and dropping them
right up-to the next sprint and you can all see, realistically based on
progress to date, what happens.

The only problem is retrospectively tracking the change as decisions to
re-prioritise are made over a long project, which is kind of a good
problem.

I think clients ‘get’ saving money by not developing stuff that they do
not need or use. Not sure that the Gantt chart is the tool to sell that
idea even.

While looking for another article to reference I read this, which is
useful, albeit a bit nerdy software. The ‘transparency’ paragraph is
what you are asking about, I think.

The article I was looking for is this one

Which nicely encapsulates the benefits of getting cracking delivering
working software, rather than titting about with bloated requirement docs
and Gantt charts.

Regards

angus

I absolutely understand the allergic reaction to ms project and gant charts
but it seems to me that its a langauge clients already understand and that
they look for this level of clarity in order to get sign-off on budgets and
timelines.

Can anyone point me towards some resources that would bridge the gap
between client-friendly waterfall plans and something a bit more
progressive & realistic?

Many thanks

rgds

Nick

PS If anyone shows you a Microsoft Project Gantt chart, run a mile.

Very true. The only two developers who ever showed me a Gantt chart at the
beginning of the project never referred back to it (even if I brought it
up) and ended up delivering late and over budget having missed all their
milestones (from said chart).
