Yes, I second that, so recommend: www.wurfl.org<http://www.wurfl.org> www.deviceatlas.com<http://www.deviceatlas.com> www.bango.com<http://www.bango.com> (device detection and analytics) I don't use the device databases for redirection, as we do this at a content distribution (network) layer. If you want to know the pattern matching we use, please contact me off list (craig fullstop sullivan at belron fullstop com). Bango is very handy for us as it gives us info on network operators, the exact device model ID string and the local marketing name for the product, in the country in which it's used! They also do a range of detection techniques so we have a complete picture of smartphones, featurephones, games consoles, media players, tvs etc. These two are fairly basic but are free: http://detectmobilebrowsers.mobi/ http://code.google.com/p/php-mobile-detect/ Even if your detection isn't perfect, I have very high volume stats in the UK market and check the user agent strings regularly. Even if you aren't using one of the device services above, you can do traffic direction or device queries to handle almost ALL devices. Just make sure there is a clear and fast route for any mobile handsets that don't get detected as one, to make their way to the mobile site manually. I get problems with new device manufacturers tweaking the user agent strings and carrier specific vanity settings but it's not as bad as people think. Looking at the figures in our stats, we get 98+% in the UK anyway, straight to their destination. I can see how many mobile devices land first time on the desktop site (they shouldn't) and the number is low - but it isnt 100%. Don't get hung up on perfect handling here anyway - if you aren't delivering a decent device experience for the major classes that visit your site, don't worry about redirecting Paraguayan telco fiddled rebadged Galaxy S IIs - ok? I would not worry about featurephones - even when we have a simple site like ours, which will happily work with a 10 year old flip phone. Nobody buys or surfs with a featurephone - the UI, the experience just sucks too much. Everyone with decent data that I've spoken to in the US/Europe says that featurephones are incredibly low conversion as the UI of browsing/shopping sucks. If any of you are interested in stats, I now have pretty comprehensive model and OS breakdowns etc. for 30 odd countries. Contact me off list if you are curious or want the regex. Regards, Craig.
