Hey folks, Not posted before but this one I can help with... On the question of learning AdWords rather than outsourcing it-- That one's quite simple for me... Google will teach you how to use AdWords, Google will not be able to teach you why some campaigns succeed beyond 'average' and others bring only an adequate ROI. Think of it this way-- if Google was accessible and as easy for an entry level person to use as someone with history on the system, everyone would be making a profit from their AdWords accounts. Getting the most from AdWords takes quite a holistic approach (which doesn't stop with the ads and keywords but reaches through to all forms of concurrent marketing and the destination pages etc)- which in my opinion can only be perfected through experience. If you do outsource your AdWords, make sure you do so to a very close partner who is able to confidently work on all aspects of your marketing (or at least have some input to them). It's not so much a question of "how easy is AdWords" but knowing that AdWords only works profitably under the control of a switched on marketing/analytical mind. Learn it so that you can understand it fully and then either bring in consultants to deploy or work in partnership with experts. Caveat being size of campaign- if your clients spend less than £5K/month, Google educational material should be sufficient, the differences in perfection might not be worth the consultation costs... upwards of that (and certainly beyond £50K month) you need experts. Hope I jumped in correctly... rarely post in group format.
