[uk-netmarketing] Advice about domains?

Hi Caroline

While I'd snap-up a few obvious ones, possibly even for your own use, I wouldn't get bogged down with buying everything like .biz etc.

While there are certain benefits to be had from owning the domain name for a country, you can tie yourself in knots trying to sort it out. Unless you are actually operating in that country, from almost every angle that counts a .com and a relevant strategy will do the job perfectly well.

Wordpress.com & .org, for example, serve different purposes.

But, for many, many years, Apple.co.uk was owned by an illustration agency. It only changed in 2012 and is now owned by Apple Inc ( http://www.dashdomains.co.uk/domain-news/apple/ ) but it was the illustration agency's for a long, long time. Apple still doesn't own iPad.com or iPad.co.uk either and that doesn't seem to causing any issues (although it did shell out a few millions for iCloud.com & iPhone.com).

From an SEO point of view, there's more to it than having the right tld. A .com with multi-lingual content and decent authority should easily trump a cyber squatter.

That's my tuppence anyway.
