[uk-netmarketing] Advice about domains?

Caroline,

Suggestions I've given before to clients, as part of domain name portfolio
consultancy I've done; be it for domains that are going to be 'active'
(used), or indeed as part of a 'defensive' (unused) portfolio, is as
follows.
Brands, major products (if you have them) + common typos and misspellings.
1) Generally you 'need' the gTLDs (global top level domains). That's the
.com &, .net and .info. .biz has slipped down the food chain, unlike the
.info that has gained traction.

2) er that it's which CCs, country codes do you need. This I'd suggest are
the territories you operating in. As you mention .co.uk. Canadian domains
are a 'bugger' to get without a local Marks/presence. If you having to
'lie' then consider why you're thinking of having it. It's the same with
.US and .tel and your memory of those is what, now? .cn is flavour of the
month as is .co (since Google picked some up) but you could go on for ever
if you wanted, or until your cash ran out!

3) Economic areas you operate in i.e .eu/asia

Obviously, given there are hundreds or extensions it's a fools game to go
after everything. Do you operate a broadcast channel? .tv for example

Think of it this way if the extension is a horror story to obtain, or you
don't have current, or future plans to operate there then it's equally
going to be a horror story for somebody else to obtain too - Canada for
example. If they've got legitimate IP/Marks then that's a different ball
game anyway.
As it stands some of the European domains are 'fiddly' enough to purchase.

In terms of horror stories, what you're most likely to come across is
unsolicited emails from people trying to put the fear of god into you about
not having dot x, y, or z and if you don't go for it then they're about to
sell it to another buyer (It's either available or it's not). Then you're
back to do you/have plans to operate in that territory. If not.............
Do you care?

The biggest issue you may encounter is not purchase but 'acquisition' of
already taken gTLDs or major Country Codes. This is where obtaining advice
from a somebody with specialist experience might come in. Estimation of
possible costs and cheapest, most efficient way to acquire them etc. Even
if 'retrieval' might be the best option i.e through any dispute procedures.
It is of course cheaper to purchase what you need if they're available now,
than to have to acquire them on the secondary market later (see gTLDs and
essential CCs above). However, concentrate on what you need and don't get
panicked into buying what you don't.
After all they can soon start adding up. I've just done some domains for
Africa and some of them 'ain't' cheap. Having a definite portfolio that's
managed as a project, will also avoid piecemeal 'pickups'.

Yours
