[uk-netmarketing] Advice about domains?

Hi Caroline,

Hope all is well with you.

A few years ago when .asia was launched, I looked into buying the domain
extension for Duratread Tires (my husbands business). Since Duratread is a
registered trade mark around the world I went ahead and bought the .Asia and
.cn, .in, .biz, .info .uncletomcobblyandall (ha, ha!), and then for good
measure, added in domains such as duratreadotrtires.com. (BTW: we have
business and contacts in Asia, so it wasn't difficult getting a business
partner to register .Asia for us).

We did this primarily because we were worried about the Chinese Tire
competition and wanted to prevent them from hijacking our brand name by
claiming the domain name on another country extension. We were right to be
worried as it seems that Duratread was a name that some of the Chinese
manufacturers that were at that time springing up all over Quindao would
have dearly liked to get their hands on! I started receiving emails from
supposed lawyers and domain companies who were threatening us to surrender
our domain name to them. Naturally, we just stood our ground, ignored most
of the emails and eventually it ended up going away.

When the extensions came up for renewal, I took a decision not to renew most
of them for the following reasons:
1. We don't sell in Asia or China (we manufacture in Asia)
2. The Duratread brand is now well established, particularly in our
primarily markets
3. Waste of money
If you are, or have ambitions to be a large, international, well established
brand, and you are planning on marketing your brand and products in those
countries around the world, then you should buy TLD's; or if you feel
threatened by potential hijacking of your brand or jumping on the back of
your success, then maybe you should buy prudently where you feel the most
threat.

For you specifically, I would buy the .co.uk extension as you are based in
the UK (and set it to redirect to your .com DNS where you want all your
traffic to go), but the rest of them, especially .biz, .info I would not
bother with I think, generally speaking, they are a waste of money. Take a
look at this Wikipedia page
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains> to
understand more about the TLD's.

This is just my experience and maybe not far ranging enough, so I would be
interested to see what everyone else says on this subject.

Best wishes,

Suzy

Subject: [uk-netmarketing] Advice about domains?

Hi UK Net Marketers who are not on holiday,

We've been advised to purchase a bunch of domain names for security's sake,
ie
.biz, .org, .info, .tv, .eu, .co.uk

In order to improve our international security and appeal, we've also been
advised to buy
.asia, .au and .ca

The first set will cost us about £300 for 5 years via GoDaddy. I don't know
what the second set will cost us, but it will require me to lie and say I'm
a Canadian citizen or live in Asia etc etc.

How important is domain name purchase for security's sake?
It feels a lot like buying insurance / gambling, but I'm finding it very
difficult to assess risk. Plus I'm not keen on lying.
Have you ever head horror stories?

Thank you

Caroline
