Hi Jon

Creative is important, but the best performance is achieved by strong creative, a methodical approach to testing and a collation of actionable data... that's how you get the BEST performance, not just a good one.

However the biggest issue (after price) with Hitwise is that most users don't really put the data into action. As Steve suggested there has to be a plan in place to do something about it. There are too many businesses out there who just read it and have an 'ah, that's interesting' approach to the data - but the competitive analysis is more valuable than your own. See what your competition is up to, what's working for them, where they are getting their traffic and conversions from... surely that's worth a lot?

As for some of the other tools mentioned - SpyFu and KeywordSpy aren't really that accurate (big problem if you're in the analytics game), Alexa and Compete are too broad-brush and mainly tells you what you either know for sure, or are pretty certain of. 

Although anyone is welcome to challenge me on those assertions!
