A number of companies have made an attempt to exploit Internet access via
premium rate numbers including http://www.chargit.com/ and
http://www.echarge.co.uk/
These systems have had limited success to date. I believe that this is due
to:
a) The products or services being offered aren't desirable enough to the
consumer.
b) The visitor is required to download and execute a program. This is a
significant barrier.
c) Users are invariably charged for the amount of time they spend on-line
via the premium rate number. Consequently they are even more concerned
about spending too much time on-line. Speed and usability become much more
significant issues.
d) In most cases its not an International solution and limited to a
specific geographic region.
There are other reasons, but I believe these to be the main four.
The ideal micropayment solution would be one that made a charge to your
telephone bill without requiring you to disconnect.
All the best,
