The following article indicates an amazing average of $250 per customer in

a range of extremes from $1.92 to $980 for e-commerce sites.

And hey I thought paying a buck was expensive! I guess the figures above

include all the overheads for the marketing department. Taking a simplistic

approach, a banner ad at $40 CPM with a 1% click through rate would give $4

per click through, but a 'click through' is not a customer so it will

depend on your 'user to buyer conversion rate'.


It would be interesting to be able to compare on-line and off-line costs. I

suspect banner ads are a lot more cost effective and targeted than some of

the mass market telly advertising going on right now.


Maybe some of the big shopping sites would like to share figures with us

all :-)
