cos some (but by no means all) ISPs get a revenue share on telephone
calls to their services.

hence, people like freeserve can justify being free.

it is, i think, spurious to suggest that because you pay your telephone
bill you are paying an entrance fee to a competition (unless the
competition is being run by the ISP). That is like saying that cos you
paid a bus fare you are entitled to free entrance to the cinema...
