The problem with walled gardens is that they can keep more customers out

than they keep in. This is what online services like Prodigy, CompuServe,

AOL and MSN discovered when the Internet took off.


A communications system - Internet, WAP, ITV, telephone - is very different

from a retail store, it's value is directly related to the number of

people/services/whatever it connects you with.


A WAP (or ITV) provider which tries to hoard their customers will struggle

to

provide enough services to compete with more open systems. It might make

sound commercial sense for Carlton to sell TV's which only allow you to

watch

their programming, but how many would they sell? Maybe a number similar to

the number of WAP phones which have been sold to date?
