However, if someone "bought" the chinwag mailing list and sent me a mail
of this type, without any mention of chinwag, I would not be impressed. If
the mail came from the list then I wouldn't be so bothered, although I
would still delete it before reading. I am totally against people just
"buying" mailing lists. It just shows a lack of effort to promote your
site in other avenues, and really I would say it is a smack in the gob.
Use currently existing lists and newsgroups, don't start your own.

What was mentioned originally was not a permission based email marketing
activity at all though. It was just someone wanting to get hold of a list
of UK-based addresses to send advertising out.
