Nick,
We advertise by pay per click (gawd - did I say that we take online
advertising - now that means that others on the list will phone me up over
the next few days and try to sell us advertising - kindly don't).
We have been advertising pay per click since August - with US Goto & UK
Goto. Not a massive amount of experience but interesting to us anyway.
1) Yes other competitors try to "click" your budget away - just part of
the game really.
2) Your booby keyword - the site name - we have definately put our site
names into the keywords - this ensures that people who are searching
directly can find you (if by chance you are not listed in that search engine
correctly)
You should expect some annoying things to happen every so often - but our
sales via pay per click have far outweighed the costs of running the
program... but it seems that this kind of thing only works on high item
costs (such as travel - which we are).
Also - if you can pay US $0.01 for someone to visit your site - and you
happen to have a banner advert on it - depending on your advert revenue you
could almost cover the cost of your advert by your banner - or if someone
clicks on 5 or more pages you could bid higher...
Also - ensure that you are not paying for one UNIX server to talk to
another.... so if a robot happens to visit findwhat - how can you be sure
you are not paying for the robots visit?
Also - findwhat have an affiliate scheme - perhaps an affiliate is clicking
happily earning $0.03 for each time they visit your site !!!
So check your logs and see what the IP is of the visitor who has come from
findwhat - also what timeframe they visited in etc...
Personally we are having some success with the freeserve pay per click -
from goto UK. Not may clicks but a few buyers - and that is what counts !
