I believe that, in a sort of "in between" version of this model (i.e. no
delivery to home, but an aggregation point), this has been going on for some
time in the Japanese mail-order industry: corner shops & local stores have
been revitalised by their new roles as collection points for goods ordered
elsewhere. This model has simply been adopted by the online world.
Perhaps in the UK our President's (sorry Prime Minister's) attempts to
position sub post offices as local "one stop shops" for a range of services
could be extended to include this type of activity, thus leveraging the "new
economy" to support local communities? Perhaps we should all fax our MPs (as
per another thread) to urge support for Government-subsidised "lifestyle
collection points" to aid our new economy?
