I'm excited enough to be investigating distributing my content across
WAP. As I understand it so far:
- I write my WAP app
- add the WAP MIME type to my server
- hook up with a WAP gateway
Now, I don't fully understand that last bit. Is a WAP gateway something
that would be provided by a specialist ISP? I understand it has to be on
a (wireless) network node. Or is it provided by the WAP device's user's
service provider, eg Vodaphone?
If I do have to involve a third party to provide me with a WAP gateway,
could anyone recommend a company...
Dan,
Firstly your understanding is correct. Your WML (Wireless markup language) content can be sat quite happily wherever it wishes to be. You then need a distribution network for this if you plan not to align to a mobile operator (mail me off list to discuss this option) and you also need your wml to run through a WAP gateway. There are increasingly becoming many options for this, not just from the manufacturers own gateway points of view but from independent companies who have been able to throw together gateways with varying degrees of success. So you have a number of options at your disposal.
Lastly you will want to sign up to Eurowireless - www.eurowireless.co.uk it's a rapidly expanding closed forum for wired and wireless professionals who meet once a month in the UK (London mostly) to be presented to by the likes of Nokia, Grey Interactive etc about the wireless future commercially and strategically. We are also building into it a technical forum for those who need Q&As about the nitty gritty etc. It currently stands at just over 300 members from a host of F1K companies.
