apparently the trick is to take advantage of the 24 hour opening.

go down the pub til 11pm
go for a quick indian
hit Hamleys about 12.30am, blind drunk.

advantages:

fewer kids, you're well prepared, and you get a lot longer to play with
the toys before the security throw you out for being too old.

but I'm with you: I find even fairly bad online experiences infinitely
preferable to being treated with the utter contempt that most high
street retailers practice.

Thetrainline.com may have the user interface from hell, but it still
beats the queues at victoria.
