Call-me buttons work in the following way (in general): the user fills
in a form field with their phone number (and sometimes extra
instructions such as which extension to ask for) and presses the submit
button. The button-operator (such as PhoneMe, Netcall etc.), who
operate a big switch type-thing, initiate a call to the (e.g.) site
owners - assuming it's picked up, the person who answers the call is
told that the other side of the call is being initiated. The punter is
then called, and assuming they answer, the two calls are connected
together. This is the general concept that I saw operating a year or
two ago, when these buttons were just coming out. The technology may
have changed recently.
The main drawback of this technology is that two phone calls have to be
made (1st to the site owner, and 2nd to the punter) and the site owner
will pick up the bill for BOTH calls. Again, they may have changed this
recently, but I doubt it. If I remember, you pay for the initial
creation of the service (it was not that expensive), a small rental and,
of course, the call charges. I think they're a great idea but will not
suit everybody - the double charges are worth taking into account, but
then again, an 0800 number costs a fortune to operate as well, and is
often seen as an important part of the customer service offering.
