The point I guess is to capture a database of email addresses into which
you can sell the site's service when it does appear. Remember the non-net
people out there aren't as demanding as UKNM people generally and won't
think too much of registering. Egg.com captured a database of about a
million people prior to actual launch - a handy thing to have.
I think there's a lifespan to this strategy however, and is not exactly
'permission marketing' led. Plenty of people will unsubscribe, of course.
