A while back, I seem to remember reading one of Alexei Sayle/David
Stafford's excellent "Great Buses Journeys of the World" columns in Time
Out, (they never did find a decent replacement), about this kind of thing.

As I recall, Alexei was proposing jetting off to Australia/Canada/America or
wherever and blagging his way onto TV talk shows and big paying gigs by
pretending to be "Britain's top funnyman", (this was before he had his own
TV shows).

Simple idea ... go to a foreign country and you can artificially leapfrog
hierarchy - particularly if you're American. (Don't know why. There are
exceptions, of course, but many yanks can be summed up by this simple
equation ... Poor material + slick presentation = polished turd with a mic).
A similar thing happens a lot in football. How often have you seen a local
press headline like "HIBS SIGN BRAZILLIAN ACE"? Everyone thinks "oooh!
He's Brazillian! Must be good!". Three weeks later he's sat on the subs
bench getting pelted with pies.

Shame Alexei never followed this idea up. Who knows? He might have ended
up with a cameo in a Steven Spielberg blockbuster.
